So last weekend I woke up with burning in my lower right gums. No biggie...I brushed it off as some crazy pregnancy symptom and once I got up and moving it was gone. So, at work on Tuesday I was eating lunch and my right jaw/neck area started hurting. I reached up and felt my upper neck/lower jaw and there was a ginormous lump. It was huge! I immediate told my lunch group and everyone said they could see it (looked like I had a chipmunk cheek). They started feeling on my neck too and everyone was baffled.
There were several theories that arose that day while I was getting "felt up". One was that it could be my lymph node. I had been pretty sick the following week and that could have caused it. The other theory is the one that I think it was...a clogged saliva duct. A fellow coworker said the same thing happened to her dad. That same area would hurt and swell when he ate. She told me it goes away in about a week and I should gargle with warm salt water, suck on candy, and apply a warm compress.
For the rest of the day my neck was very tender and when dinner came around and I started eating, it swelled real bad again. After consulting with my mom and webMD, all signs pointed to a clogged saliva duct. Did you know your saliva can crystallize and make stones? Well...it can. We decided I'd wait one more day and if it didn't get better I'd go to the doctor.
Wednesday I was miserable. I didn't even want to eat because of the pain. Every time I ate, my neck expanded and hurt really badly. That night I took Tylenol and went to bed early with the intention that I'd call the doctor in the morning.
Thursday I woke up...no pain. I ate breakfast...no swelling. I was absolutely fine ALL day. Just as quickly as it came, it went. Phew!!! Pregnant mama can eat happily once again! Have you ever experienced this? It was so weird and random. I'd never heard of such a thing...
Here is a self-portrait of my neck one of the times it was swollen...not the best, but you can still see it a little bit.
