Panties, Potty and Patience

Sunday evening while changing Hannah's diaper for bed I noticed some red marks on her butt...I think it was from the diaper rubbing on her plus the heat.  I told her that she needed to stop wearing diapers otherwise she would get boo-boo's on her butt and might have to go to the doctor (a little lie, but worth it).  She hates going to the doctor, so I casually mentioned that maybe the next day (Monday) we would wear panties.  She said ok....

Now back up to Christmas 2008...Hannah was about 19 months old and wanted a potty.  We bought her a princess potty.  Over the next year and a half she would sporadically sit on it, barely ever go, and often refuse.  I seriously thought she would be 16 years old and still not potty trained!! Throughout the year and a half we promised her lots of things if she would use the potty: food, toys, etc....little did we know that she would remember all that was promised to her!! The doctor informed me that she'll let us know when she was ready, that we didn't need to force it....but I was ready now!!!

So Monday morning came, and I put her in panties.  After a little whining and some struggle, she finally picked out a pair of panties to wear (Dora of course).  About an hour later we had our first accident.  No big deal....I made her sit on the potty, cleaned her up, and put on a fresh pair of panties.  About an hour later I heard her running to the bathroom...she half went in her panties and half in the potty...success!! She hadn't peed in the potty in about 6 months, so I thought this was huge!! I gave her marshmallows for a reward (there's the food promise).  From then on, she went to the potty on her own!! She said she is scared of the big potty for now and will only sit on her little one, but I'll take it!! We also had to take her on a trip to Target to get toys for going to the potty (yet another promise we made to her).  She got a Buzz Lightyear and Woody doll and will get Toy Story 2 soon....

Yesterday we hit another milestone when she pooped on the potty!! She hadn't gone since Sunday evening and I was wondering how she would handle pooping.  I was a firsthand witness on watching my nephew, Jacob, get potty trained. He would pee in the potty with no problem, but refused to poop in it for quite some time, so I was definitely curious about how it would play out.  Hannah was awesome!! She told me she was going to her room to get a puzzle and the next thing I hear is, "Mommy, I pooped!"  I didn't know what to expect, but when I walked into the bathroom, there was her poop :)  So much for the worrying!!

I am so excited and proud of Hannah!! She really IS a big girl now!! She is growing up sooo fast :)
